  1. What kind of animal is Arthur? What about his friends?

The Brain is a bear. Binky Barnes is a burly bulldog. (Try saying that three times fast!) Muffy and Francine are both monkeys and Buster is a rabbit. Sue Ellen is a cat, Prunella is a rat, Fern is a dog and George is a moose. The Tibble Twins are bear cubs and, of course, the Read family appear at the front of the animal dictionary. They're aardvarks.

  2. What is Arthur's full name?

Arthur's last name is the same as his father's and mother's last name: Read. His full name is Arthur Timothy Read.

  3. Why isn't Arthur's nose long like other aardvarks?

In Marc Brown's first book about Arthur, "Arthur's Nose," he drew Arthur with a long nose (like aardvarks have). But, with such a long nose, we can only see Arthur's mouth when Arthur is facing sideways! Mr. Brown wanted to draw Arthur so you could see him well no matter which way he was facing. That's why Arthur looks the way he does today.

  4. How old are Arthur and D.W.?

Arthur is eight years old and D.W is four.

  5. What does D.W. stand for?

D.W.'s full name is Dora Winifred. It doesn't stand for Dim Wit, Arthur!

  6. What are Arthur's parents' first names? What do they do for a living?

Arthur's parents' names are Jane and David. His mother is an accountant and his father is a caterer.

  7. What city and state do Arthur and his friends live in?

They live in a small town called Elwood City, but it isn't actually a real city -- so it isn't in one of our states. The creators of ARTHUR made up the city for the Arthur stories. The nice thing about that is that you can imagine Arthur and his friends are anywhere! You could even pretend that they live in your neighborhood!

  8. How do I send an e-mail to Arthur or one of his friends?

You can send an e-mail to Arthur or one of his friends, care of WGBH, through our Arthur's Mailbox contact form.

  9. Can I get an autographed picture of Arthur and his friends?

We don't have any Arthur pictures or autographs to send, but here's how you can make your own picture! If you go to the Friends section of the site, you'll find links to homepages for all of the ARTHUR characters. Every character's homepage includes a link to that character's coloring page. Click on the coloring page link and that will take you to a picture to print out and color. You can also access all of the character coloring pages through the Coloring Page Index in the Print area of the site.
