Make letters materialize

Materials
  • black paper
  • chalk
  • glue
  • rough-grit sandpaper
  • scissors
  • stiff paper or board
Directions
Familiarize your children with the alphabet with this fun chalk activity.
  1. Make an alphabet: Cut the letters of the alphabet out of sandpaper, and glue them to a large piece of stiff paper or board. (Keep this sandpaper alphabet for future activities!)
  1. Choose letters: Help your children spell out their first names on your alphabet board. (Younger children can choose just their initial.)
  1. Chalk it up: Have children place black paper over their first letter, and rub a piece of sidewalk chalk over it with moderate pressure. As they do this, the letter will appear on the black paper. Repeat this process to spell out a whole name.
Take It Further
Have children make chalk rubbings for family and friends.
