Have you ever wished that you could pause life long enough to figure out the answers to your problems? Well, 6-year-old Alma Rivera does that every day in Alma’s Way! Alma is a proud, confident Puerto Rican girl living a fast-paced life in the Bronx alongside her family, friends, and neighbors.
Alma’s Way is an engaging animated series for kids ages 4 to 6 focused on critical thinking and helping young viewers to discover their own unique voice and find solutions to challenges. The audience comes along with Alma as she learns to think for herself, make decisions, and understand other people’s points of view—while making lots of messy and hilarious mistakes all along the way.
Meet the Characters
Alma
Impulsive, but trying to be more thoughtful.
Alma Rivera is a 6-year-old girl who is determined to figure things out for herself. Born and raised in the Bronx, Alma makes things happen, and she doesn’t hold back. She’s impatient, but kind; curious, but sometimes a little oblivious. Alma makes a lot of mistakes, but her “Think Throughs” help lead her on the right path. Alma loves reading (mysteries, of course), making up games with her friends, and spending time with her family.

Mami, Abuelo, Papi, Junior, Alma
Even from the sidewalk, you can hear laughter and music coming from Alma’s house! Mami is a music teacher who keeps it real while keeping it fun. Papi is a veterinarian who has a big heart and an even bigger repertoire of “dad” jokes. A small kid with a big presence, Junior looks up to his older sister. Abuelo is an old school grandpa who delights in his family. The Riveras wouldn’t be complete without Chacho, their lovable (and mischievous) little dog.
Alma’s Relatives
Tia Gloria, Eddie Mambo, Uncle Nestor
Alma’s tíos and cousin live right next door, and they are part of the loving family who help Alma as she thinks things through. Tía Gloria is a subway conductor who acts like a big sister to everyone she meets. Meanwhile, Uncle Nestor is an actor who doesn’t mind sharing the spotlight—much. Their son is the musical Eddie Mambo—he and Alma are “primos-amigos” (cousin-friends) who take on the world together.

Lucas Reed, André King, Rafia Huda
Alma’s closest friends are André, Rafia, and Lucas. André is an African-American boy with a great imagination who’s always drawing chalk murals on the sidewalk. Sporty and competitive, Rafia is a Bangladeshi-American girl with an infectious enthusiasm. Then there’s Lucas, a Caucasian boy who has style and a passion for singing.
About the Creator: Sonia Manzano
Born in the South Bronx, Sonia Manzano is a first-generation American of Puerto Rican descent who has impacted the lives of millions since the early 1970s as the actress who defined the role of “Maria” on the acclaimed television series, Sesame Street. Twice nominated for an Emmy® Award as best performer in a children’s series, she has won 15 Emmys® for her television writing. She is also the author of the picture books No Dogs Allowed, A Box Full of Kittens, and Miracle on 133rd Street, published by Simon & Schuster. Sonia’s first young adult novel, The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano, and a memoir, Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx, were released by Scholastic. In May 2016, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Emmy® Award by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in recognition as a pioneer in the representation of Latinos on television and for portraying “Maria” for 44 years on Sesame Street. Sonia lives in New York City with her husband, Richard.
