My very own UG Book
In “Snug as a Bug,” Frog and Bug try to find the word that finishes the rhyme “Snug as a bug in a ____.” They find several “UG” words before they find the word RUG. In this activity you and your child can create your own book with words that rhyme with BUG.
Materials:
- Several pieces of paper that are the same size (8 ½ x 11 or smaller)
- Markers or crayons to draw with and/or pictures from old magazines or newspapers or copies of family photographs
- Printouts of BUG WordFriend and MUG and RUG WordThings (Click here for printable page - optional)
- Glue
- Stapler or yarn and hole puncher
Directions:
- Write the word BUG on one of the sheets of paper.
- Brainstorm with your child about words that rhyme with BUG. Here are some suggestions of words you can include in your book:
- hug
- mug
- rug
- jug
- slug
- snug
- tug
- Write each word on a separate sheet of paper.
- When possible, use images to show what the words mean. Here are some ideas:
- Draw a picture or cutout and paste a picture from an old magazine or newspaper.
- Paste cutouts of the WordFriend BUG and the WordThings MUG and RUG on the pages with those words.
- Take photographs of “UG” words in your home – a rug, a mug, a jug – and include those photographs in the book.
- Add a photograph of you giving your child a hug.
- Help your child create a cover for the book. The cover could include the title of the book and the name of your child, such as “My Bug, Hug, Rug Book” or “UG!!!” by Max Brooks. Your child can also draw and paste pictures of different “UG” words on the cover.
- Place the cover on top of all of the pages and staple all the pages together or punch a hole in the top left hand corner of each page and tie the pages together with yarn.
- Read your new book together with your child.
