General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo's (1808-1890) position as a Californio leader
couldn't save him from losing his lands. Born to a wealthy Californio family,
Vallejo rose quickly through the ranks of the Mexican army, and became a
wealthy and influential landowner. Despite his American sympathies, Vallejo was
held prisoner by American soldiers who tried to take over California during the
"Bear Flag Rebellion" of 1846. When California became part of the United
States, Vallejo served in the state's constitutional convention and was elected
to the first state senate. Like other Californios, he lost most of his land as
a result of legal battles with new settlers.
