No one knows if Joaquin Murieta (1830?-1853?) actually lived, or if he was
merely legend. The story goes this way: Murieta was born in Mexico and migrated
with his wife to California. When a $20 monthly tax was placed on foreign
miners, Murieta struck back by robbing mining camps and stage coaches. The
California governor offered a large reward for the bandit's capture, dead or
alive. Texas Ranger Harry Love claimed the reward after presenting a severed
head that he said was Murieta's. Although the bandit raids decreased, many
insisted that Love had killed the wrong man.
