on PBS Kids – check local listings!

Episode #101 Tinky Winky

Tinky Winky makes his special Teletubby Day more fun with music and dance.  Round and round, up and down, Tinky Winky dances all through Teletubbyland but finds his dancing skirt gets in the way.

Educational Objectives: Large motor skills; repetition

Make it a Tinky Winky Day: Dress in purple for Tinky Winky and have everyone color/decorate a (red) bag.  Have purple grapes or plums and grape juice for a snack.

Activities
Spinning round and round and round in circles is fun for a lot of children.  When you stop it is sometimes hard to stay standing up!  Fall down on the soft cool grass and watch the clouds until you aren’t dizzy any more.  After you’re finished going round and round, dance along with Tinky Winky or make up your own dance. Use your imagination and have fun dancing!

Episode #103 Laa Laa

Laa Laa shares her special Teletubby Day with her favorite thing.  Playing outside with her orange ball is most fun! When it begins to rain, Laa Laa moves indoors and gets in the Teletubbies way and makes everyone fall down.

Educational Objectives: Large motor skills; repetition; problem solving

Dress in yellow for Laa Laa Day and have everyone draw an orange ball or use soft orange ball(s) for the following activity.  For a snack, have orange and banana slices.

Activities:
Go outside with your child and a good-sized ball.  Show her how to roll the ball.  Help your child kick the ball and toss the ball.  Get a large basket or other suitable container and practice tossing the ball into the basket! Teach your child to play catch.  Stand close to one another at first and gently toss the ball back and forth.

Episode #104 Po

Po arrives on her red scooter for her special Teletubby Day.  Then, Po is in a hurry on her scooter through Teletubbyland and everyone falls over, even Po!

Educational Objectives: Large motor skills; repetition; prosocial skills

Dress in red for Po Day.   Have sliced red apples and cranberry juice for a snack.

Activity
Have your child choose an activity, running, jumping, arms up and down, etc.  When you say, “fast”, your child should do the activity as fast as they can. (Be sure not to do things so fast that someone gets hurt!)  When you say, “Slow” everything must slow way, way down.  This is fun with a group of children too.  See what a funny time you can have on a Po Fast and Slow Day.

Episode #105 Noo-noo

Noo-noo’s favorite thing is cleaning up after the Teletubbies but on his special day, the Noo-noo just can’t help being a little naughty.  It’s a messy day to play and giggle with the Teletubbies and their lovable Noo-noo.

Educational Objectives: Prosocial; problem solving; repetition

Dress in blue for Noo-noo Day. Have a bowl of blueberries and a cup of juice with a twisty straw to make slurpy sounds like the Noo-noo

Activity:
First, everyone must draw a picture of his or favorite thing on a full-sized sheet of paper. Then, everyone sits in a circle, holding the picture on top of their head.  One child is the Noo-noo and walks around the outside of the circle, looking at each child’s picture.  (If he wishes, he can make the Noo-noo’s silly slurpy noise.)  After walking around the circle one or two times, Noo-noo slurps up one of the seated children’s pictures.  Naughty Noo-noo!  The child whose picture has been “cleaned up” must get up and chase Noo-noo around and around the circle until one of them is just too tired to run any more. The child who was the Noo-noo sits in the circle, and the child whose picture was “cleaned up” becomes Noo-noo for the next round.

Play until everyone who wants a turn at being the Noo-noo has had one.  When everyone is good and tired, have a happy Big Hug.  (And perhaps a nap!)

If you don’t have a group of children, play a clean up game with a bubble activity as a reward.  Plan a fun family day of washing and bubble play.  Mix up a batch of homemade bubble mix.  Let it sit for a few hours while everyone gets the washing done – washing dishes, washing the car, washing the windows.  Be sure the preschooler in the family has a sponge and his or her own special clean up assignment.  Praise everyone for a job well done. . .Then it’s time for bubble fun!

For the Bubble Mix:
Add one cup of dishwashing detergent to 3 cups water with 3/8 cup corn syrup.  Mix gently with a spoon and let the mix sit for 3-5 hours.

Many household items make good bubble makers.  Shape big circles out of several pipe cleaners twisted together.  Use a tea strainer.  Make a big bubble string circle.  Plastic drinking straws, old-fashioned potato mashers – even berry baskets can make great bubbles.
