Introduction to Super Why’s Reading Day and Previous Day Review
Campers talk about Super Why and are introduced to the day’s activities. They review the camp rules, and the literacy skills that they learned on Days 1 through 3.
Interactive Viewing: "Hansel and Gretel: A Healthy Adventure” / Transform into Super Why
The group watches and discusses the episode “SUPER WHY and Hansel and Gretel: A Healthy Adventure,” then transforms into Super Why whose “Power to Read” is the focus of the Day 4 activities. Download or stream the episode using the link below.
Computer Time (Optional): Super Why’s Reading Power Bingo
Super Why’s Reading Power Bingo computer game is a group activity. Campers take turns finding the opposite of given words. A link to the game can be found below.
Craft Activity: Healthy House
Just like Super Why, campers change a phrase from a sentence in the story to make the witch’s house healthier.
Game: “Be” Healthy
Campers take turns describing a selected word, while their fellow campers try to guess what the word is.
Movement Activity: Musical Chairs And Finding Super Letters
Campers play musical chairs with a twist—they practice literacy skills by reading the words taped to the chairs they sit on. As words, not chairs, get taken away, campers fill in the blanks. They then search for the Super Letters and find the Super Story Answer.
Campers watch a video clip where Super Why shows how changing a phrase can change the meaning of a sentence. They then recreate the game from the episode, changing the meaning of a sentence by substituting words. Download or stream the episode using the link below.
Do a quick review activity, inviting campers to read words in a sentence, then change some of those words to change the meaning of the sentence. If you wish, do a one-on-one assessment of each camper’s ability level. Then sing the Hip Hip Hurray song to celebrate the accomplishments of the day.
In take-home worksheet #3, campers pick the words that best complete the sentence, and in take-home worksheet #4, they write in words to finish the sentence.
