Introduction to Princess Presto’s Spelling Day and Previous Day Review
Campers talk about Princess Presto and are introduced to the day’s activities. They review the camp rules, and the literacy skills that they learned on Days 1 and 2.
Interactive Viewing: “Hansel and Gretel: A Healthy Adventure” / Transform into Princess Presto
The group watches and discusses “Hansel and Gretel: A Healthy Adventure” episode, then transforms into Princess Presto whose “Spelling Power” is the focus of the Day 3 activities. Download or stream the episode using the link below.
Computer Time (Optional): Princess Presto’s Create–Your–Own Superhero
Campers play Princess Presto’s Create–Your–Own Superhero computer game as a group activity. They take turns identifying letters by their sounds, then using the letters to spell out words. A link to the game can be found below.
Craft: Activity: The Puzzling Carrot Bookmark
Practicing the association between letters and the sounds they make, campers put together puzzle pieces to spell the word “carrot.” They then make a bookmark from the completed puzzle.
Game: Pin the Princess On the Letter
In this “Pin the tail on the donkey” variation, after hearing a letter sound, campers take turns pinning a picture of Princess Presto to the letter that makes that sound.
Movement Activity: Princess Ping Pong Pitch and Finding Super Letters
Campers practice letters/sounds associations by tossing lettered ping-pong balls into marked containers. They then search for the Super Letters and find the Super Story Answer.
Campers review the sound of each letter in the word carrot by watching a video clip of Princess Presto. They then reenact her game from the episode by holding up cards with letters that match the letter sound made by teacher. Download or stream the video clip below.
Do a quick review of the letter sounds practiced in Day 3. If you wish, do a one-on-one assessment of each camper’s ability to identify the letter associated with the letter sound, and ability to spell carrot. Then sing the Hip Hip Hurray song to celebrate the accomplishments of the day.
In take-home worksheet #3, campers circle the picture of the food that starts with the given letter. In take-home worksheet #4, they color a picture using letter sounds associated with five given colors.
