Introduction to Wonder Red’s Words Day and Previous Day Review
Campers talk about Wonder Red and are introduced to the day’s activities. They review camp rules, and the literacy skills learned on Day 1.
Interactive Viewing: “Hansel and Gretel: A Healthy Adventure” / Transform into Wonder Red
The group watches and discusses the episode “SUPER WHY and Hansel and Gretel: A Healthy Adventure.” They then transform into Wonder Red, whose “Word Power” is the focus of the Day 2 activities. Download or stream the episode using the link below.
Computer Time (Optional): Wonder Red’s Rhyme ‘N Roll Game
Play Wonder Red’s Freeze Dance Rhyming Game as a whole group activity. Campers take turns helping Red collect rhyming word family words as she skates to her grandmother’s house. A link to the game can be found below.
Craft Activity: Bake A Fake “AKE” Cake
Campers make a special cake decorated with paper candles that reinforce –AKE family words.
Game: Pass The Pepper
Campers pass around a “hot” pepper. When the music stops, the camper with the pepper has to read an –AKE family word.
Movement Activity: All Across the –AKE Lake and Finding Super Letters
Campers use –AKE word cards to cross a lake so they can bring a healthy snack to the witch. Then campers search for the Super Letters and find the Super Story Answer.
Watch and sing the Wonder Red Rhyming Song sounding out –AKE family words. Download or stream the video clip using the link below.
Do a quick review of the –AKE family words practiced in Day 2. If you wish, do a one-on-one assessment of each camper’s ability to recognize the rhyming words. Then sing the Hip Hip Hurray song to celebrate the accomplishments of the day.
In take-home worksheet #3, campers look at pictures of -AKE family words and pick the letter or letters that each word starts with to form complete words. In take-home worksheet #4, they circle, then draw pictures of the –AKE family words.
