Day 1 Materials
A list of the materials needed for Week 1, Day 1 of camp.
Introduction to Alpha Pig‘s Alphabet Day
The campers meet their teacher and each other. They talk about SUPER WHY, then discuss what they will be doing during the week. Camp rules are established.
Interactive Viewing: “Hansel and Gretel: A Healthy Adventure” / Transform into Alpha Pig
The group watches and discusses the episode “SUPER WHY and Hansel and Gretel.” They then transform into Alpha Pig, whose “Alphabet Power” is the focus of the Day 1 activities. Download or stream the episode using the link below.
Computer Time (Optional): Alpha Pig’s Lickety Letter Bingo
Campers play Alpha Pig’s Lickety Letter Bingo computer game as a group activity. They take turns identifying the letters on screen until the screen is cleared, revealing a picture. A link to the game can be found here.
Craft Activity: Healthy Letter Garden
Campers practice letter identification skills by identifying the first letters of different healthy foods. They then make a healthy letter garden to take home.
Game: Alpha Pig Alpha Band
Each camper gets a musical instrument with a letter on it. When they hear the letter, or see someone point to it, they play their instrument.
Movement Activity: Alpha Pig Road and Finding Super Letters
Campers search for and identify letters hidden throughout the room. Then, just like the Super Readers in the SUPER WHY episode, they search for the Super Letters and use them to find the Super Story Answer.
Sing along with Alpha Pig’s ABC song, then play the Alpha Pig game from the episode. Download or stream the video clip the link below.
Do a quick review of the letters introduced and practiced in Day 1. If you wish, do a one-on-one assessment of each camper’s ability to identify the letters. Then sing the Hip Hip Hurray song to celebrate the accomplishments of the day.
In worksheet #3, campers follow the letters of the alphabet to solve a maze. In worksheet #4, they match upper and lowercase letters.
