Little and Big Exercises

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Physical Exercise/Movement
  • Science and Math

Objectives:

  • Gross Motor Skills
  • Basic Math Skills
  • Self Control

Here's a way to help children appreciate things that are little and things that are big.

Materials:

  • Music from a radio, tape player or CD player
  • Space to move around

Directions:

Encourage your child to make up exercises that have really big movements, like:

  • Making windmill arm movements
  • Kicking as high as he or she can
  • Lifting knees and touching them with his or her hands

Then see if your child can show you some small movements, like:

  • Exercising fingers only
  • Opening and closing jaws
  • Moving only toes while keeping feet on the floor

Move to the music. Alternating big and small movements helps your child develop self-control.
