Paper Chains

illustration of paper chains

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Arts and Crafts
  • Caring and Cooperation

Objectives:

  • Cooperation
  • Fine Motor Skills

One child working alone can't make a very long chain, but if another child gets involved, that chain will grow...and grow...and grow!

Materials:

  • Assortment of colored construction paper
  • Blunt-nosed scissors
  • Glue or tape

Directions:

Show the children how to cut the construction paper into strips suitable for making loops. Make a loop from a construction paper strip and tape or glue it together. Then show the children how to thread a second loop through the first to make a chain. The children might enjoy the challenge of making the chain as long as the whole room.

When the chain is finished, hang it up with masking tape, and you've got a homemade decoration for a birthday or holiday -- or a way to make an ordinary day all the more festive.
