Neighborhood Helpers

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Appreciating Diversity and Uniqueness
  • Work and Responsibility

Objectives:

  • Develop Responsibility
  • Literacy

Helping isn't just something we do at home. There are lots of people who do important jobs that help a whole neighborhood or town.

Materials:

  • Magazines or newspapers
  • Blunt-nosed scissors
  • Paste
  • Blank paper
  • Stapler

Directions:

Have the children look through some magazines and/or newspapers and ask them to find pictures of community helpers, like:

  • Office worker
  • Mail carrier
  • Truck driver
  • Doctor, dentist, nurse
  • Teacher
  • Waitress, waiter or chef

Paste the pictures onto the blank paper and write the names of the jobs next to the pictures.

Staple the pages together, and you've made a book.

When children know that everyone's job is important, they gain an appreciation for people and value all kinds of work. They can also feel more secure knowing that many people help take care of them and their family.
