When you help children see that
letters are all around us, they come to understand that letters, words, and
reading are useful in everyday life.
Materials:
- Magazines
- Scissors
- Construction paper
- Glue
Directions:
During nice weather, take the class
on a "field trip" in the neighborhood. Walk outside to look for letters, such
as on signs, on car license plates or in store windows.
When you get back to class,
encourage the children to look through old magazines, catalogs, and newspapers
to find letters they recognize, such as the ones in their name or the letters
they found on the walk. Have the children cut out the letters and paste or
glue them on construction paper to make a collage. Invite each child to talk
about his or her collage.
Note: If younger children don't seem interested in looking for letters,
invite them to look through magazines for favorite objects such as animals or
airplanes. When the collages are complete, write the first letter of each
object's name near its picture.
