Imaginary Viewers

illustration of pretend telescopes

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Pretend Play

Objectives:

  • Develop Imagination
  • Creativity

Create your own "telescopes" and help encourage imagination.

Materials:

  • Assorted small boxes or cardboard tubes
  • Non-toxic markers
  • Paper
  • Scissors (optional)

Directions:

The children can create their own imaginary viewers with cardboard boxes or tubes. (If you are using boxes, you will need to cut a hole on two opposite sides for children to look through. Children can use the cardboard tubes as if they were telescopes or binoculars.) Encourage the children to imagine they can see something when they look into the viewers, and let them talk about the imaginary things they can see. The children could use colored markers to decorate "their imaginary viewers." Some children might want to use the markers and paper to draw pictures about the things they imagine.

You might want to reassure them that no one can see what they are thinking when they imagine; if children want you to know what they are thinking, they have to tell you.
