Dress UpActivity for Teachers
What Do You Want To Pretend To Be...?

illustration of dress-up clothes

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Pretend Play

Objectives:

  • Develop Imagination
  • Use Play to Work on Feelings

Moms and Dads, Kings and Queens, babies and superheroes -- dress up clothes can encourage so many different kinds of play.

Materials:

  • Dress-up clothes
  • Play props (purses, briefcases, phones, etc.)

Directions:

Offer the children different dress-up clothes and props to use for pretending. Watch to see which clothes and props the children choose and who they want to pretend to be. If children have trouble getting started with their play, you can ask questions such as:

  • What kind of things would that person do or say?
  • Are there other kinds of people you would like to pretend to be? (Firefighters? Doctors? Letter carriers? Chefs? Farmers?)

After playtime the children might want to talk about the work that their parents do. Have the children tell you what kinds of clothes or supplies they would need for that kind of work. From time to time, place clothing for those jobs in the dress-up area.
