Grown-Up Play

illustration of dress-up clothes

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Pretend Play

Objectives:

  • Develop Imagination
  • Use Play to Work on Feelings

Children especially like to imagine what it's like to be the grown ups who are important in their lives -- that's why they often play about being moms and dads.

Materials: (Any or all of the following)

  • Purses
  • Jewelry
  • Hats
  • Old briefcase
  • Old nightgown
  • Baby doll
  • Baby bottle
  • Blanket

Directions:

Some children see dress-up clothes and props, and they immediately begin elaborate pretend play. Other children may need some help getting started. You might suggest a situation close to what your child has experienced. For example, pretend that there is a sick baby in the house or that your child is a new babysitter who needs to learn the baby's routine. Familiar themes like that can make the best starters for dramatic play.

While some children want to play about being the grown-up, other children might want to be the babies. Sometimes the stresses of growing are hard, and children like to have a break by pretending to be the baby, wanting someone to take care of them.
