Recycling and Other Ways to Care for Our Planet
Thoughts for the Week:
Learning to take good care of the earth is one way children
can learn to take good care of themselves, and there are so many ways they can
help care for the earth and its resources. When children make toys from
"throwaways" around the house, for instance, they are actually recycling.
Adults who spend time with children can, by example, help them learn about
conserving resources. One of the best gifts we can give children is the
experience of being in households where people use resources wisely. That's a
gift that will never wear out.

Summary of the Week:
This week explores some ways
children can join with adults to help care for the earth -- including reusing
and recycling. Mr. McFeely and Mister Rogers visit a recycling center to see
what happens to discarded bags, bottles and cans, and there's a video visit
with a sculptor who creates art using thrown away objects. Noted
environmentalist and marine biologist, Sylvia Earle, asks Mister Rogers to join
her on a snorkeling expedition in the ocean. In the Neighborhood of
Make-Believe, there's too much garbage, and the neighbors work together to come
up with a solution to their make-believe environmental problem.
