Milk Carton Building Blocks

illustration of milk carton building blocks

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Arts and Crafts

Objectives:

  • Creativity
  • Resourcefulness (Finding new uses for things)

Making milk carton toys can be a way for your child to understand about reusing things and have some fun, creative play.

Materials:

  • Empty paper milk cartons
  • Self-adhesive paper
  • Masking tape
  • Construction paper

Directions:

Collect a number of empty paper milk cartons. Wash them thoroughly.

Cut off the tops of two cartons and push the open end of one carton into the other.

If you want, you can cover the blocks with colorful self-adhesive paper.

You can make some short blocks by using only one carton and covering the open end with the adhesive paper or wide tape.

Block building has so much to do with science -- your child can experiment with physical principles of balance, sizes, and gravity...learn to deal with frustration when the blocks fall over...and find value in persistence in building them back up again.
