Walking the Line

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Expressing Feelings and Developing Self-Control
  • Physical Exercise/Movement

Objectives:

  • Gross Motor Skills
  • Persistence

Help your child develop coordination and learn that practice works.

Materials:

  • A long piece of string or masking tape
  • Tape to fasten the string
  • Chalk (optional)

Directions:

You can make a type of balance beam for your child to walk on by taping a long piece of string or masking tape to the floor. (If you prefer, you can do this activity outdoors by drawing a line on a sidewalk with chalk) Show you child how to go carefully along the line by placing your feet heel to toe as you walk. When your child tries, he or she might have to hold your hand at first. This activity takes some practice, so you might want to try it again from time to time. You'll probably find that your child gets better and better at it -- something you could point out to him or her!
