Make Your Own Fruit Sundae

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Food

Objectives:

  • Creativity
  • Learning More about the World

This sundae isn't made from ice cream; it's made from fresh fruit. Your child can make his or her own creation and see how fruits are alike and different.

Materials:

  • Sundae glass or mug
  • Apples, oranges, grapes, bananas, etc.,
  • Sprinkles
  • Granola, nuts, cereal, cherries, etc., for garnish (optional)
  • Whipped topping or yogurt

Directions:

  • As you choose the fruits you'll be using in your sundaes, you can talk about the outsides of the fruit -- how the skins are alike and how they are different.
  • As you cut open the fruit, you could ask your child to tell you how the inside of the fruit is different from the outside. If the fruit has seeds, you might want to point them out to your child.
  • Chop the fruit into chunks and separate them into bowls.
  • Give your child a sundae glass or mug.
  • Have your child make a sundae creation of his or her own, using the fruit, sprinkles, granola, nuts, or any other ingredients you may want to provide.
  • Top it off with some whipped topping or yogurt, and Voila! A healthy treat.
