Rice Cake Faces

illustration of decorated rice cakes

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Expressing Feelings and Developing Self-Control
  • Food

Objectives:

  • Expressing Feelings
  • Fine Motor Skills

Round rice cakes make a great base for a face that can show different emotions and generate some healthy talk about feelings.

Materials:

  • Rice cakes
  • Spreading knife
  • Peanut butter or cream cheese
  • Raisins
  • Apple slices
  • Bananas

Directions:

Let each child spread a rice cake with peanut butter or cream cheese. That's the foundation for a face.

What kind of feeling would the children like to make on the rice cake faces? Raisins could be used for eyes, noses or mouths. An apple slice can make a smiling or frowning mouth. A banana slice could be a surprised mouth or eyes.

You may want to ask the children to talk about what makes them feel angry, sad, surprised, scared or happy.
