Pancakes and waffles are a tasty treat.

  • skillet or waffle iron
  • pancake turner
  • 2 bowls

  • measuring cups and spoons
  • mixing spoon
  • syrup, fruit, or honey
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • Combine flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cinnamon in a large bowl. Beat eggs in a separate bowl and add milk and oil. Pour the liquid into the dry mixture and mix with a large spoon until moistened. Cook the waffles on a heated waffle iron or the pancakes on a griddle.

Parent TipsThe ingredients for pancakes or waffles are easy to measure and easy to mix, so your child can help with much of the work of making the batter. Different people in your family might prefer different toppings -- syrup, jelly, or honey, or fruit. As the French say, "To each his own taste," and your child learns that people can have different preferences.
