Show and Tell crayons

What do you do with the old crayon pieces in your box?   Try making a window hanging!

Have a parent or teacher show you how to use a crayon sharpener or plastic knife to shave off small slivers of crayon onto a piece of waxed paper. Then cover the crayon shavings with another piece of wax paper.

Then ask your helper to press the sheets together with a warm iron. The crayon shavings will melt and run together, making interesting-looking designs. If you hang the designs in a window, the light will shine through, like through a stained glass window.

Parent TipsChildren can be wonderfully creative with crayons, markers, or paints—when they are given the freedom to use those materials responsibly in whatever way they want, to make what they want. Sometimes unusual art activities like this one can spark and excite children's imaginations and creative expressions even further and in different ways. With a project like this, you can help your child be creative with hue and enjoy making something that's full of bright colors.
