Josephine the Short Neck GiraffeActivity for Teachers
Singing Instead of Saying

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Music

Objectives:

  • Develop Imagination
  • Language Development

There are so many different ways people can communicate with one another.

Materials:

  • Kitchen timer or clock

Directions:

You might want to try this activity at the end of lunch or snack time -- or another quiet time during the day. Set a kitchen timer for about five minutes and encourage the children to sing whatever they want to say until the time rings. You may want to start by singing the directions. When the time is up, ask the children what it was like to sing instead of speak the words. You could explain that operas are stories that people sing. Would the children like you to set the timer so they can try it again? Do any of the children want to act out a little story -- singing the parts instead of saying them?
