Secret Messages

illustration of secret soap message

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Language and Literacy

Objectives:

  • Literacy
  • Understand Cause + Effect

Here's a way for children to create their own secret message...and then reveal them.

Materials:

  • A bar of white soap
  • Knife (for adult use only)
  • White paper
  • Soft lead pencils

Directions:

Cut the bar of soap into chunky strips about an inch wide so the children can use pieces of it like crayons. With your help, older children can write actual messages with the soap. Younger children can draw symbols or use scribbles to write pretend messages. The soap does not show up on the white paper, so the message remains a secret until you help your child "discover" it by rubbing across the paper with a the side of the pencil lead.

Note: Remind the children to be careful not to rub their eyes when they're playing with the soap.
