GrandparentsActivity for Teachers
Talking about Grandparents

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Appreciating Diversity and Uniqueness

Objectives:

  • Building Self Esteem
  • Appreciating Diversity

This activity can help children learn more about their own family, and understand and accept individual differences in other children's families.

Materials:

  • Paper
  • Non-toxic markers

Directions:

If possible, share something with the children that came from one of your grandparents. It might be a picture, an object, a song or game, or something that you learned to do. What can the children tell you about their grandparents? Do they have special names for their grandparents? It's sometimes fun to hear all the different names children call their grandparents. You might make up a song using just names for grandparents.

If any of the children feel left out because they don't know their grandparents, you might reassure them that everyone has grandparents -- even if he or she doesn't know them. If you have time you could draw a simple family tree for each child showing each child's family. The children might want to take this tree home and ask their parents to tell them more about their grandparents and others in their family.
