A Sailboat In The Wind

illustration of sailboat

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Science and Math

Objectives:

  • Learn More about the World
  • Understand Cause + Effect

Any kind of water play is a natural attraction for many children, and with this activity children can create their own boat and learn more about the wind.

Materials:

  • Blunt-nosed scissors
  • Waxed milk cartons (pint or quart size)
  • Lightweight paper
  • Straw or stick
  • Modeling dough (*see recipe below)
  • Sink, bathtub, dishpan, or outdoor wading pool with water

Directions:

For the body of the boat, cut the milk carton from the base so that the carton has a bottom and is about three inches tall.

Fasten the paper to a stick or straw to make a sail, then set it in place by sticking it into a piece of clay or modeling dough in the bottom of the milk carton.

Now your boat is ready for its maiden voyage. Show your child how to blow on the sail, and watch how the boat moves through the water. Children soon learn that the boat will tip over if they blow on it too hard, so they have to use some self-control in blowing. You might want to talk with your child about real sailboats and what makes them move.
