Cape Play

Age Range: 3-5

Subject:

  • Expressing Feelings and Developing Self-Control
  • Pretend Play

Objectives:

  • Develop Imagination
  • Understand the Difference between Real and Pretend
  • Using Play to Work on Feelings

Just putting on a cape can be enough of a prop to help your child play about all sorts of powerful roles: being a king or queen, magician or superhero.

Materials:

  • Soft blanket, large scrap of fabric, or a big towel
  • Large safety pin
  • Crown, jewelry (optional)
  • Magic wand (optional)
  • Deck of cards (optional)

Directions:

Some children enjoy playing about being powerful superheroes. This can be especially enticing play as children become more independent, yet still recognize they don't have much power at all -- it's grownups who control when they go to bed, when and what they eat, etc. Remember, though, that this kind of play sometimes leads to "chase-and-rescue" running that can get out of hand. It can help your child to know ahead of time that you'll stop the play if someone might get hurt.
