Patriots Caught Cheating
The New England Patriots walloped the New York Jets 38 to 14 in their opening game of the National Football League season last week. But after the game, everyone was talking about the action that took place on the sidelines. The Pats got into trouble when one of their employees was caught red-handed using a video camera to tape the New York Jets.
The Patriots were taping the defensive signals that the New York Jets coaches used during the game. Teams always try to figure out what their opponent is doing but NFL rules say that this kind of videotaping is prohibited.
Nobody knows how long the Patriots, who have won three of the last six Superbowls, have done this. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell fined the Patriots coach Bill Belichick $500,000 and the team an additional $250,000. If they make the playoffs they will forfeit their first round draft pick. If they don't make it, then they lose their 2nd and 3rd round draft picks. Belichick apologized for breaking the rules. It was hard to tell if the controversy affected the team. In their second game of the season, the Patriots clobbered the powerful San Diego Chargers by the same 38-14 score!
