White House Bids Farewell to Karl Rove

A powerful White House adviser, who many describe as "the brains" behind President Bush, is resigning. Karl Rove will retire from his job as a Deputy White House chief of staff and senior adviser at the end of the month. Rove first worked for George Bush in 1993 when he ran for governor. Last week, on the South Lawn of the White House, President Bush thanked Rove for his service. Rove, in turn, said he was grateful for the opportunity to serve the nation and the President.

Born Karl Christian Rove on Christmas Day in Denver, Colorado, the 56-year-old adviser made a name for himself with direct mail campaigns. He has worked for a long list of Republican politicians including Presidents Richard Nixon, George Bush, Sr. and Ronald Reagan. President Bush, Jr. refers to Rove as "the architect" and credits him with the Republican election victories of 2004. However, many accused Rove of unfair campaign tactics and a failure to compromise with Democrats in Congress. Rove says he is leaving the White House to spend time with his wife and son. He joins the growing number of the President's key advisers that have left the White House, including Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
