Prehistoric Penguin Makes Present Ones Appear Puny
What's the last thing you'd expect to find in the jungle? How about a big penguin? That's what scientists dug up in Peru. A fossilized skeleton of a huge penguin was found. It's called Icadyptes salasi. Scientists believe it lived 36 million years ago! It was five feet tall and liked warm weather.
Most people think of penguins in cold places like the Antarctic. But there are penguins around today who live in warmer climates. The Galapagos penguins live on islands off the coast of Ecuador. The weather there can get more than 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
African Penguins also like it hot. They live on islands of the coast of Namibia and near South Africa. The penguins that swim in freezing cold water and live on the ice are called emperor penguins. They live in Antarctica where it gets as cold as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
When scientists found the new giant in Peru, they also found remains of four other species of Penguin. They hope these new discoveries will help them learn more about how modern day penguins evolved.
I'm Adelbert and that's what happened in science this week!
