New Form of Cricket May Replace Traditional Game

Fans of cricket are worried that their favorite sport is changing forever. Cricket is a bit like baseball. There are two teams, a bat and a ball. The pitcher is called the bowler because he rolls the ball. It usually bounces once off the ground and then the batsman swings and tries to hit it.

The game can be much slower than baseball. Cricket also has innings, but a lot more of them, and a single game can last for five days! The sport started in England, but it's very popular in countries that used to be colonies of the British Empire, including Australia, India, and Pakistan.

One of these former colonies is changing the sport, and that has made old school cricket fans very nervous. In India, there's a new version called Twenty20. The new rules make the game last three hours instead of several days, and there's more batting and faster action. It has become so popular in India that stadiums are selling out and games get a huge TV audience. Many of the world's top pro cricket players are signing big contracts and switching to Twenty20. Some people think the new sport might even completely replace the old. Who knows, maybe Twenty20 will come to the United States. Will baseball fans be ready for that?

I'm Lucy and that's what happened in Sports this week!
