Guess That Stink
Target Words
Aroma, Fragrance, Fresh, Perfume, Odor, Reek, Scent, Smell, Stench, Stink, Whiff
Materials
Blindfold, household items to smell such as shampoo, mustard, soil, dirty socks, laundry detergent, cheese, etc.
Directions
Gather a bunch of things you have on hand that have different smells, some good, some bad. Blindfold your kid and put something under their nose for them to smell. See if they can guess what it is! Ask questions like:
- What kind of aroma does this have?
- Did you get a whiff of that?
- Would you say that's a fragrance or an odor?
Encourage your kids to answer and describe the smells using these words. Encourage them to get creative with their answers!
Extension
Play a similar game: Guess That Sound. Gather a bunch of things that you can make different sounds with. Try ringing a bell, crumpling a piece of paper, banging on a pot, shaking beans in a cup, dragging a chair, clapping your hands, or anything else that makes an interesting sound. Blindfold one person while someone else uses an object to make a sound. See if the blindfolded person can guess what is making that sound! How did you know what object it was? Was it high? Low? Scratchy? Soft? More like a ding or a thud? Challenge each other to describe the sound.
