Activities
On Stage
Step into the spotlight and act out a story.
Materials
- Paper plates
- Art supplies (crayons, markers, colored yarn, pompoms, colored paper, scissors, glue stick)
- Craft sticks or rulers
Directions
With your child, choose a favorite story to act out. You may want to consider a familiar folktale like "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "Three Billy Goats Gruff," "The Gingerbread Man," or "The Little Red Hen." Together recall the plot and make a list of the characters. Use art supplies to make a paper-plate mask for each character, and mount the masks on craft sticks or rulers. If you wish, round up a few more actors for your play. It's likely that some actors will need to play the roles of two or more characters. The character masks are helpful for this type of double casting. When the actor holds up the mask of a certain character, the audience and other actors know that he or she is assuming that role. (It also helps to use a distinctive voice for each character.) Rehearse your play if you wish, or simply gather up an audience and perform!
Talk About It
Has your child ever been in a play or seen a play? Were you ever in a play as a child? Reminisce about your theater experiences, both on the stage and in the audience. Which experiences were most memorable?
