Cornerstones is a project of the National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM), part of the Media Access Group of the WGBH Educational Foundation, Boston. The Cornerstones Literacy Project and the materials on this site were funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs through Phase 1 and 2 grants from the Steppingstones of Technology Innovation for Students with Disabilities program.
Cornerstones was developed by a team of teachers and academics. The project team includes:
Mardi Loeterman, project director, whose background is in language acquisition of deaf children and educational and accessible technology.
Peter V. Paul, research lead, a professor at Ohio State University, whose many specialties include deafness and literacy, and who is himself deaf.
Sheila Donahue, curriculum developer, an 11-year veteran of classrooms working with elementary students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Academic advisors include: Carol LaSasso, professor at Gallaudet University, and Barbara K. Strassman, professor at The College of New Jersey. Both Drs. LaSasso and Strassman have responsibility for post-secondary students training to become teachers of students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Currently, under the leadership of Trisha O'Connell, who helped develop the project, NCAM is working with teachers to encourage the use of Cornerstones materials, and is exploring opportunities to develop additional units.
