“I do not like uniforms because I do not like the collar on the shirt.”
--Kayla
“I kinda like school uniforms but I don't like how everybody looks alike.
My school uniform is a navy blue blouse and light blue long sleeved shirt.”
--Roda, 10
“When I was new at this school uniforms just got in. I hate them even if they are my favorite color.”
--Nikki, 10
“I like school uniforms because at my old school when we didn't have them, I got teased. I also like having to wear a skirt.”
--Meredith, 11
“I just hate uniforms. I had to wear uniforms when I was in elementary school, but in August I am going to a middle school where we don't have to wear uniforms! Thank goodness! My sister and cousin are going to elementary school and they have to wear uniforms. I kinda feel sorry for them (not!!!). I had to go through it for 5 years and now it's their turn!”
--Melvina, 11
“I'm going to a school with uniforms and it's alright and all, but I'd like to go to another one with NO SCHOOL UNIFORMS!”
--Tiffani
“I LOVE UNIFORMS!!!”
--Sarah, 11
“School Uniforms, Yuck! Who would want to wear old clothing? But I love the tiny skirts.”
--Ollie, 11
“I go to a middle school in NYC and the board has decided on giving us uniforms for our next year. Most of the kids I'm friends with hate the idea, just like I did when I first heard about it. But now I think that uniforms make some sort of political statement. They make all of us equals and they cause the students to realize no one is better just because their parents have the money for them to wear fancy clothes from Saks. They cause students to not judge people by what they wear, but by who they are as individuals.”
--Bethany, 13
“In elementary and middle school you have to wear uniforms and that is so not cool. It’s so stupid! Uniforms make you look like you are not wearing what you like. In my case, I hate it. Got to go! Bye!”
--Marlene, 11
“I think that we should have school uniforms. It’s because when you wear a uniform, no one will judge you because of what you're wearing. You'll be just like everyone else wearing the same clothes to school. I think that it's kinda cute.”
--Justinne, 12
“I like them.”
--Iesha, 11
“Ok, so uniforms STINK but my mom said, ‘Well you really don't have to worry about what to wear.’"
--Raven, 10
" I hate school uniforms because they take away your right to express yourself. You can't always just be yourself when you wear a uniform. Last year I had to wear uniforms and I was a new kid and on the first day of school everybody thought I was geeky because 1) the uniforms and 2) my skin never tans so I was really pale even though I live in Florida. It was horrible!!"
--Erika, 12
"I think that uniforms are so tacky, if you know what I mean."
--Cindy, 13
"I completely disagree with what some of you are saying!!! Uniforms are horrible because of many reasons. I just read something about how they're good because you can recognize intruders. Most of the time you can find intruders because they're normally going to be older than you, especially if you're my age! I'm also not saying this just because everyone else is. It's my real opinion! I go to a school with uniforms and we wear blue or khaki pants (not jeans) and green, red or white shirts. You might think this isn't that bad but it makes the whole thing pointless because you still worry about picking the best outfit. The popular kids all wear white and blue at the same time and some people can't afford all the colors, so it's a big problem."
--Anonymous
“Why do girls have to wear short skirts for their uniforms?”
--Thai-Anh, 11
“I really don't like them! My school has them but I think of it as being good so that kids aren’t being picked on for what they wear to school!!”
--Taylor, 10
"Yes and I think they're a bad idea. People say they are equalizers and I think that's not true. People find a way to make themselves cool even if their expensive clothes are ruled out. Hair, shoes, makeup -- there are still ways, trust me. They might as well let us wear what we're comfortable in (cotton, okay, COTTON! Not polyester, C-O-T-T-O-N!!) right? However, it might be nice not to have to worry about what you're going to wear the next day."
--Aebi ^_^, 12
"My school has school uniforms. I think school uniforms are great! Everyone looks the same and people don't brag about how nice their clothes are and how ugly other people's are. I love our school uniforms!"
--Patty, 11
"I don't like uniforms, you can’t express your natural style."
--Raychelle, 11
"School uniforms are dumb and they look ugly. But in a way they're cool because
people can't make fun of what you wear. BUT I still hate them."
--Ebony, 9
"I think school uniforms are really stupid and ugly. I wish we had regular dress again!"
--Stephanie, 11
“School uniforms are so boring. They need to change.”
--Danielle, 11
“I hate school uniforms! I don't have to wear one, but I feel bad for people who do! You can't express yourself and your style. People don't know what you truly like to wear. I also think it makes people feel restricted.”
--Franki, 12
“School uniforms are okay, but I could see why people don't like them as well. The good part about them is you spend less money on clothes, you cut down on the bullying and you feel equal no matter who you are or where you come from. The bad part is they make it hard to show self-expression. You don't have that much variety to pick from and you all look alike. I really wouldn't care if my school got uniforms because I have both opinions.”
--Anonymous
“I go to a school that uses uniforms and I think that school uniforms are O.K. At the start of the school year there is a marathon. Depending on how much money you earn, you can get ‘out of uniform’ passes that allow you to wear whatever you want on that day. I think that this is an awesome idea!”
--Maddie, 8
“I don’t like school uniforms. People should be allowed to wear what they want.”
--Jessica, 12
“I hate school uniforms because you can't wear what you want to!!!!!!! P.S. I go 2 a public school so we don't wear uniforms! Hallelujah!!!!”
--Emily, 9
“I think they stink but it is a good thing in some schools. I don't wear a uniform on Fridays.”
--Adriana, 10
“School uniforms don't let your personality come out. It's boring with everyone wearing the same thing.”
--Brittany, 12
“Your said it yourself Sara, 13. Uniforms are tacky and you cannot express yourself!?”
--Brittany, 12
“I think uniforms are the most boring thing on the planet and I prefer dress code even though I've never had one in my school. Dress codes can keep the kids from seeing unpleasant clothes. My school just has rules against disgusting clothes. I think uniforms don't give you the chance to express yourself. Like if you're opposing war or something, you could have a shirt that says ‘No war’! I hope you get what I'm going for here. School uniforms are BAAAAAAAD!”
--Tyler, 11
“If you think your uniforms are bad, you haven't seen mine. I have to wear a maroon sweater in winter and summer, a blue blouse, a silver and maroon tie, grey or red trousers, a red and silver hairband and black or brown shoes!!!”
--Leonie, 12
“I don't like school uniforms. I can't wear anything I like. I can't even show people my new clothes.”
--Amber, 9
“I think it’s wrong to make children wear school uniforms because we're not there to be asked or told about our clothes, we're there to learn and that’s it. On the other hand, it sort of is a good thing because you only wear one uniform and you wouldn't take forever to pick out what you want you wear.”
--Stephanie, 12
“I hate our school uniforms now. Grades 1-5 always wear the same thing all year long.”
--Giselle, 11
“I think uniforms would be a helpful thing because then no one can be disliked by how they like to dress. It would cut down on bullying because making fun of someone is like making fun of yourself.”
--Danielle, 12
“I think they stink. Even though we don’t have them, there is talk of them at my school and my friends got together and made a plan to wear clothes underneath them on the same day and take the uniforms off in front of everyone!”
--Kari, 11
"I think that school uniforms are good because nobody can say, 'Ewwww, her clothes are out of fashion.' My school doesn't have any. I think I would like them."
--Fion, 9
“I think that they are okay but I wouldn't want to wear one.”
--Bug, 11
"I bet half of you are just saying that you don't want school uniforms because everybody else is saying that. People say it doesn't allow you to express yourself. I say that if the only way you can express yourself is by your clothes, you probably didn't have individuality to begin with. Just wearing what everybody else is wearing is not expressing yourself."
--Gama, 12
"I study in a school which has uniforms, so I really wish that I could wear normal clothes and go to school. My uniform is this white shirt with a navy blue sleeveless dress on top. I have to wear a tie and a belt and ties stink! I'm girl by the way! I think uniforms symbolize discipline, don't u think? ;)"
--Sunya, 12
"I think uniforms are good because you don't have to worry about what to wear every day. But on the other hand, you don't learn how to present yourself! What if you become a goofy-dressing adult because you didn't practice picking your own clothes while you are a kid?"
--Annie, 12
"School uniforms stifle your ability to express yourself by the way you dress. If the school is having problems with the dress code, then I think they should use school uniforms, but only as a last resort."
--Parrot16
"I love them. I think that we should have them in our schools. I had a debate about it in my class. At first I didn't want to argue that we should have uniforms, but after looking up information about it, I think we should have them. I think we need them. 'My evidence stands.'"
--Jessi, 13
"I love the idea of school uniforms. Most of you don't want a school uniform because of two reasons. One, it's tacky and two, you can't express creativity. That is all I'm hearing. There are other types of uniforms, not just white and blue. A group member in a pop group all might wear the same thing. Hello, that is a uniform! Define creativity, 'To Create'. There are other ways to be creative besides clothing. Also by wearing uniforms, it shows school spirit. You can recognize intruders and you can reduce problems. BEAT THAT, UNIFORM HATERS!"
--Sara, 13
"I think that school uniforms are really lame. There is no point. People like to express who they are by the way they dress!"
--Meow, 8
"I think school uniforms are like dressing up a Barbie. It's predictable and at least there's not rivalry with things like, 'I'm dressed better than you'…but still…"
--Mary, 12
"They stink and should be against the law."
--Tia
"School uniforms are annoying, but they stop competition and they always show who does belong there and who doesn't. But if you do sports at recess they are annoying!!!!"
--Mary, 10
"I HATE SCHOOL UNIFORMS!"
--Cathy, 10
"I think they are boring. :("
--Kyrsten, 9
"I think uniforms are O.K., but I would not want one."
--Kidston
"I think school uniforms should be mandatory only on certain days. Other days are casual. You can still wear the uniform, but you don't have to."
--Sarah, 11
"I'm stuck wearing them, but I don't wear them on certain days called Dress Down Day. Although they stink, I get to wear patriotic colors. If you don't know, they are red, white and blue. I can't wear skirts!!"
--Bethani, 11
"I don't have to wear a uniform for school, but I would hate it if I had to. I think it is much better to let kids decide what they want to wear as long as their clothes don't have nasty sayings or pictures on them. It is kind of like a way of expressing yourself. In social studies, we wrote a letter taking a stand about wearing uniforms. We had to use a core democratic value, and mine was freedom of speech or maybe it was the pursuit of happiness, I can't remember, but they both work!"
--Bridget, 11
"I think uniforms are kinda good."
--Latoya, 10
“I think it is great. Having to pick out clothes in the morning is so hard!”
--Alexa, 8
“I think we shouldn’t have them because then we would all look the same and some people don’t like skirts, like me!”
--Amber
“I think they're cute on little kids, but us big kids don't need them.”
--Jane
“I think school uniforms are dumb. You should be able to dress the way you want as long as it isn't too revealing.”
--Ann, 12
“I think that school uniforms are a waste of school money. Also, it doesn't show freedom in the school.”
--Patricia, 13
“I would definitely not wear a school uniform. It takes away from your personality.”
--Susie, 12
“I think school uniforms stink! I would hate to wear them! Kids would be looking all the same and some kids get nervous about their appearance. I know a girl who had to wear school uniforms to school and she never wanted to wear a dress again. I don't like them!”
--Alee, 11
“School uniforms don't let you express yourself. Everyone has their own style. I can see a school doing it only if they had a problem enforcing the dress code.”
--Baby
“I think school uniforms are kinda stupid because you don’t get to see how other people dress. It would only be on weekends and when there's no school.”
--Corky, 12
“I think school uniforms would be ok if u got 2 change them every other week or if they were short shorts and tanks! Well, that’s what I think, so yeah and yeah.”
--Mimi, 12
”I think school uniforms are bad and ok. I think they're ok because you'll always have something to wear every morning. I also think they're bad because everyone looks the same and it's like everyone in the world dresses the same. Sometimes you need a new look.”
--Kimberly, 12
“I think that school uniforms are bad. We do not have them at our school yet and I hope that we never have to get them. It is not that I don’t like the way that they look because to tell you the truth, some of them are pretty cute. It is just that if they want us young people to grow up as individuals, then they have to give us the opportunity. By people getting uniforms, how are we going to express ourselves? Therefore I think that no school should have uniforms.”
--Bailey, 13
“I think that school uniforms are good because nobody can say, ‘Ewww, herclothes are out of fashion.’ My school doesn't have any. I think I would like it.”
--Margaret, 11
“I think school uniforms are a trip.”
--Arlesya, 12
“I don't think uniforms are great at all. They don't let you express your imagination or creativity. They limit individuality. I think everyone in America (including kids) should be able to wear what they want. Now, I think it is ok to have rules about what you wear at schools (like no belly shirts or anything like that) but I don't think anyone has a right to limit your freedom. Isn't that what our forefathers came for? Freedom? Also, what if you can't afford uniforms? Would they have to expel you? I think uniforms are a bad idea.”
--Abby, 13
“I do not like school uniforms because you have to wear the same outfit 5 days a week. They are also uncomfy. It is also to hard to tell people apart.”
--Missy, 12
“I don't approve of school uniforms because that will take away some of the authority kids have on themselves, what they want to wear. I don't see the point in it. You know where you go to school and that's all that really matters.”
--Shanetta
“I think school uniforms are cool but I think they just want you to dress properly.”
--Ashley
”I think uniforms are cool.”
--Kristian
“I don't like them because you always have to stay in dress code! Though they may be thought of as equalizers, they're not. Without uniforms, you're in competition for the cutest T-shirt. With your uniform, you're still in competition for the shortest skirt and to look the best.”
--Meghan, 11
“I think school uniforms aren't that bad unless you’re one of those people who are basically obsessed on looks and stuff like, ‘Does this go with this?’ That is so annoying …but anyway, I think uniforms are a good way of not being made fun of.”
--Titus, 12
