Do you consider yourself a "smart spender"? How do you save money on things you want and need to buy?

Unfortunately, these pages are no longer accepting new posts. We are so proud of the IML community for creating such a wonderful place to exchange stories, opinions, and advice. We hope you'll check out all the great comments that have already been posted, and that we'll be able to take new submissions again in the future.

Here's what other kids had to say:

Hello dear IML'ers! Hope everyone's having a good summer. We have some sad news today. :-( Due to a shift in focus away from tweens, PBS funding for It's My Life updates has been discontinued until further notice. This includes moderating the You Said It pages. It's devastating to us at IML because we love what we do. We fought hard to keep these pages available to you guys who rely on them and make them so great, and haven't given up yet. We're still out there, looking for more funding. In the meantime, no new YSI posts will be approved, unfortunately. We hope that changes soon. Keep your fingers crossed for us and stay in touch! Any questions, email us at itsmylife@pbs.org and we will do our best to answer.

I guess,I save money by not buying shorts, but cutting jeans into shorts. So I can buy those cheap jeans on clearance and cut them into shorts, and use the scraps for something else. It's better then buying $40 shorts that won't last, right?
--FluttershyYo

yes i do think i am a smart spender. first get the things you absolutly need, then make a list of things you want. next check how much money you have left from buying your needs. take some of the leftover money for buying the needs and put in the bank or something. that way there is less money to spend which is a good thing in this case. then look at the list of wants are some of the stuff listed really even necessary. cross that stuff out,and then look at the stuff you know you really want and are truly a smart and good bye. check with an adult just to make sure. finally you are free to buy your wants without going over board! good luck and later!

I have 20 dollars, but i put it in my bank account so i wouldn't touch it. (x i'm going to go out and get my money as soon as I have 100 and I'll go to the mall with my friends. But normally, i try to limit it to one thing from each store that i really want. If i have enough left, i'll go back. I usually do that at Hottopic, Forever 21, Rue21, Claires, Bath and Body Works, etc. c;

no i dont consider myself as a smart spender because when i have money i will spend it the day i get it but if i was a smart spender i would have my mom keep it so i wont spend it on useless stuff like candy
--moni444

I'm kind of a penny pincher :o. But I'm not obsessed with money or anything; I'm just afraid of regretting a purchase. There's not a whole lot that I want to buy, though. The best way I spend money on stuff is if I really want the thing. Setting goals usually helps me.
--dancerilla

Well, i kind of have to be a smart spender, because i only get, like, 10$ every year! My trick is to set a waiting time for myself. I wait a week or two, then i see if i still want to buy it. I usually don't.
--anessa3

Yes, I do. I have a money idea right now. I can spend up to a hundred dollars on things for myself. Then I can spend up to a hundred dollars on video games. Then up to A hundred dollars on gifts. Then up to a hundred dollars on donations.
--Lavender11

Well, I usually look for good deals at the clearence section. Today, I bought something that was $1.00 but on clearence, .30! I also save on things I really want, like COLLEGE!
--Jingles228

I consider myself as a "half-smart spender," actually. I think about the long-term use of something I want to buy, and I use it, but maybe not for as long as I had hoped to use it for. After I had bought the object I wanted, eventually I start using something else in its place, in which the formal usable object (object # whose place got taken) got either left in my room and forgotten about it, or my mom tempted me to throw it away a couple months (maybe just weeks, too) later. I earn my money simply. I just wait until my practically-straight-A's (well, actually, at my school an A is a 4) report card. :-) I usually just save up from that. I don't really visit the store as often, either. So, basically, I think I need to visit it pretty soon. Oh, well. Bye, and thanks for reading this comment. Maybe. - Beth M.

Whenever I have money I usually can't resist throwing into whatever charity I see.

Yes. I asked for money from everyone for my birthday and what i decided to do with it is to give it to a baby fighting cancer bcuz her circumstance is so much more important that clothes or jewelry or shoes or iPod Touch cases =) its a great way to show love to their family!
