Age range: 3-6

Theme Area: Boat Float

Related Episode: The Big Race

Subjects/Skills: Art; Science

Materials Needed:
Empty, clean milk carton, cut in half
A bar of soap
Pipe cleaners
Craft sticks
Construction paper
Safety scissors
Yarn or string
Glue
Decorative materials, such as markers

Directions:
Invite your child and a friend or sibling to a "Boat Float."

Tell the children that their mission for the "Boat Float" is to create a boat that will float. Let them know that they will have to work together to make one boat.

Put all the materials out on a table. You can have them check the floatability of items in a water-filled sink or basin.

Encourage the children to work together to design the boat. For example, they might make the bar of soap into a sailboat by taping a triangle shaped piece of construction paper to a pipe cleaner and sticking the sail into the soap.

Congratulate them when they compromise and remind them to look for ways to solve problems together.

When they're finished, have them test out their boat in a sink or basin.
