My results were that even though the hammer weighs a lot it is all in the gravitational hold of Earth. If you take something that is bigger and weighs more than something that is still heavy then most likely the bigger object will be able to hold the smaller object. That is my results.
Hannah, BC | Balancing Act
The heaviest part of the hammer was under the table.

on my first try the hammer was a rocket then the second try

Have you ever tried to lean back standing up and then run. It is hard isn't
it. I challenge you to try to find out why.

Our 3rd grade class tried the experiment as a class and first found that you
need rubber bands that are pretty sturdy to get this to work. We had flimsy
ones that kept breaking or that weren't rigid enough to balance the hammer against
the ruler and table. We also found that you need to have a ruler that is wooden.
Our plastic ones were too flimsy and either broke or weren't sturdy enough to
balance the hammer. So a lot of our experiment was about figuring out the directions
and which materials would work. After we got the right materials, we were able
to balance the hammer but we disagree in our class as to where the center of
gravity is.
Even after your sneak peak, 2 kids think the COG is out by the handle, 5 think it is above the table top, and 12 think it is under the table top. Could you please help us understand which answer is right?
Thanks, Eva

Hello Eva, Well it sounds like you made the most out of this investigation!
You studied things more closely than many people do. Well Done! If you got the
hammer to hang under the table finally, then the COG is located somewhere underneath
the table top, that's for certain. If you simply set the hammer on the tabletop,
then the COG is above the table, of course.
