School Bus
Did you know that school buses are safer than cars, trucks or minivans? That's due in part to the federal government's strict safety regulations for school buses.
Which safety features do you see on your school bus? Print out this quick checklist and take it with you the next time you ride. Then think about who you could contact about your resultyour school principal, your town's mayor or othersand how you could help make buses safer.
Checklist:
-
Emergency exit windows: Are any of the windows on your school bus marked as special emergency exit windows? In the case of a traffic accident, this can help students in the middle of the bus who are not close to the front or rear doors.
-
Emergency exit door in the back of the bus: This door should be clearly marked "Emergency Exit" with instructions about how to open the door.
-
Crossing control arm: This arm is mounted to the front bumper of the bus and swings out when the bus's front door is open. It keeps you from walking too close to the front of the school bus, where the driver might not be able to see you.
-
Stop arm: This is mounted to the driver's side of the school bus and warns other cars that they must stop when the bus is loading or unloading students. It usually has flashing red lights and swings out when the bus's front door is open.
