Including Everyone
True or False: Everybody in my class looks, walks, talks, and acts exactly the same.
False, right? You know everybody's different. Well, some kids face special challenges when they go to school. They may have special physical needs, like they use a wheelchair to get around, or they can't hear. Some kids may have special learning needs, too; they may read letters differently, or spell differently.
The federal government has passed laws to make sure that every kid gets a good education. These laws require schools to make physical adjustments, like installing ramps, elevators and special fire alarms that combine sound and flashing lights.
Federal law also requires that schools set up programs for students with special learning needs. This may mean tutors or helpers for those students, as well as slightly different assignments (for example, a student may dictate a story into a tape recorder instead of writing it down).
Take a look around your school. What types of things do you see that are designed to help kids with special needs?
