Fire Department How does government affect me?
Fire Department

Has a firefighter ever visited your school?

Each community pays for its own fire department. Some firefighters even sleep at the fire station in case there is a fire during the night. In some areas, firefighters are volunteers. Volunteer firefighters have other jobs, but when there is a fire, they are there to help.

Firefighters put out fires, and try to help prevent fires from starting. They teach you how to STOP, DROP, and ROLL if your clothes catch on fire. They also make sure that buildings and homes are as safe as they can be. They make sure there are smoke detectors and sprinklers in public buildings.

Did you know?
Dalmatians have helped firefighters for many years. Their first job was to chase rats out of the horse stables. They also guided fire wagons through the streets.

Fire engine trucks can pump 15,000 glasses of water a minute!
