How do people in your town get to the store, or to work, or to school? Whether it is by car, bus or subway, the government helps you get there.
Both the federal government and your state government help pay for the highways around your state. Your local government pays for roads in your city. After a big storm, your local government is also the one responsible for cleaning up the roads, removing snow and making repairs so that the people in your community can drive safely.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has the job of making sure speed limit signs are put up on the highway and that the police enforce the speed limits. They also make sure that cars have seat belts and air bags to keep you safe.
Local governments sometimes build subway systems and bus systems to help people get around in cities.
