The Legislative Branch

The Legislative Branch, known as Congress, makes the laws of the United States. The two groups of lawmakers in Congress are the:
  • United States Senate
  • United States House of Representatives
The Senate
Every state has 2 senators for a total of 100 senators. Each senator is in office for six years. Members of the Senate must:
  • be at least thirty years old
  • have been a citizen of the United States for at least nine years
  • be a resident of the state in which they wish to run for office
The House of Representatives
The House of Representatives is made up of 435 representatives and the number of representatives varies depending on the population of the state. Each representative is in office for two years.

To be a member of the House of Representatives you must be:
  • at least 25 years old
  • have been a citizen of the United States for at least 7 years
  • be a resident of the state in which I wish to run for office
