The Executive Branch

The President heads the Executive Branch of government. Some of the President's duties include making sure that the laws Congress has passed are enforced, making treaties with foreign governments, and acting as the Commander-in-Chief of the military.

Of course, the President has plenty of help in doing his job. The Vice President is second in command to the President. If the President dies, resigns, is removed from office, or for some reason cannot act as President any more, the vice president takes over. Third in line for the presidency after the vice president is the speaker of the House of Representatives.

The President also depends on the members of his Cabinet (no - not the piece of furniture) to help him govern the country. The Cabinet is made up of the people who are in charge of government agencies such as the Department of Education, Department of Commerce, and Department of Health and Human Services.
