Using Cyberchase in Class and After School

Each CYBERCHASE episode is rooted in the NCTM standards, so educators can use episodes to motivate students, introduce topics, or support particular lessons in existing math curricula. The math tools the CYBERCHASE kids use to triumph over evil are the same tools 8- to 12-year-old viewers can use to practice and improve their math skills.

To find out how each episode connects with the NCTM math standards, use the episode descriptions page or the search feature on this site. You have the right to tape and reuse the episodes for up to one year.

Here are some Tips for viewing with students:

Before you watch the show ...
  • Ask the kids questions to focus their previous experience with the math topic and to set up for the topic explored in the episode.

  • Do an activity that introduces the kids to the math idea embedded in the episode.

While you watch the show ...
  • Leave the lights on to prevent the kids from zoning out.

  • Pause the show to ask questions that help highlight a point ("What was the key idea Jackie just discovered?"), define a word in context ("What does 'symmetry' mean as Inez used it here?"), or make connections to real-world events ("What does this remind you of in your life?").

  • Look for opportunities to invite kids to join in on some of the problems the CyberSquad is trying to solve ("How would you solve this?").

  • Ask for predictions: "What will happen next? What do you think they're going to do?"
After you watch the show ...
  • Make connections. Talk about the connection between what you see on CYBERCHASE and the kids' everyday activities.

  • Give the kids opportunities to think and talk about the show after it ends.
You can use some of the related lessons and activities and "For Real" video clips found on this site to talk about, read about, or do activities to build on the math topics you've seen explored in the episodes.
