Cyberchase Episode: Of All the Luck

Convinced that his failure to defeat Motherboard is simply a result of bad luck, Hacker collects the Ten Lucky Charms of Cyberspace. The caper works! Hacker's luck changes, and good things begin happening to him. When Motherboard realizes what Hacker has done, she sends the kids and Digit to Hacker's hideout in the Northern Frontier to help the Lucky Charms escape. The kids use logic to free the Charms.

The Big Idea:
When you have to choose from a confusing mix of possibilities, you can use logic -- a set of tools for thinking clearly to picture and refine your choices.

Cyberchase FOR REAL (Epilogue)

Bianca and her friends are ordering pizza, but Bianca has a problem. She can't bear to eat anchovies! How can she order a pie with pieces where the anchovies are nowhere near the pieces with toppings she can eat? In the live-action segment of "Of All the Luck," Bianca uses a Venn diagram to solve her problem.

Math Message: Venn diagrams can help you picture and refine possible choices.

More Math Fun:
Have students clip cartoons from a newspaper and mix up the panels to create their own cartoon puzzles. Xerox the puzzles and hand them out for the rest of the class to solve.

Challenge students to use a Venn diagram to sort items when the properties of the items don't fit exclusively into one group or another.
