Got a Big Idea for an invention? Use these 10 tips to make your Big Idea a BIG HIT!
- What’s the problem your invention will solve?
Start an Inventor’s Log. Make notes about the problem you want to work on and how your Big Idea invention is going to solve it.
- No idea for your invention is too crazy!
Use your Inventor’s Log to write down everything about your invention that comes to mind – no matter how crazy – so you have lots of ideas to work with.
- Now hear this!
Talk up your ideas with friends and grown-ups. What sounds workable? Which ideas make them most excited?
- Focus, focus!
Use what you’ve learned to shape the one Big Idea you want to work on.
- Make a plan.
Describe your Big Idea in your Inventor’s Log. Make sketches, and list any materials you need. Decide now if you want to make a working model of your invention, or make the real thing.
- How will this part work?
Look for parts of your invention you don’t understand. Any questions? Write them down, then ask a grown-up and do some research to find the answers.
- Test with a model.
Use easy-to-find materials (cardboard, old toy parts, paper tubes, and other stuff) to make a working model of each part you want to figure out. Making a model is a great way to understand something and think of even better ways to build it!

- Revisit your Inventor’s Log.
Before you start to build your Big Idea invention, check your Inventor’s Log. Have your forgotten anything? Are you still on track with your invention? If the answer is no, then keep working. But if the answer is yes, then it’s ...
- Time to build!
Whether you make a working model of your Big Idea, or make the real thing, follow your plan and build it. Then try it out. Does it work? Can you think of ways it could work better?
- Don’t settle for "good."
Share your invention with others, and ask for comments that will help you make your Big Idea the BEST Idea you’ve ever had!
